Ezell’s Famous Chicken has gone mobile as the founders’ daughters expand the business to food trucks.

The Ezell’s Express food truck started serving customers in early May. Growing up in the industry, Phylicia Davidson says she and partner Jennifer Stephens make a great team.

“Jennifer is the operation side of it and I’m everything back of the house, administrative and setting up dates and things like that,” Davidson tells KIRO Radio’s Let’s Eat.

The two agreed to make Ezell’s portable after Davidson had her second child and was seeking a more flexible schedule.

“We just kind of got together and started thinking, and food trucks are the new thing. It gives you that flexibility, but you’re still running something that we know and love, so it just made sense.”

Getting the operation on wheels, however, was a little more challenging than they thought it would be. Davidson explains they’re the only food truck around rolling with four fryers, so outfitting the truck to meet their specifications was a priority.

Space and time restraints – this food is meant to be express – also meant modifying the menu a bit. But Davidson says you’ll still get a taste of the Ezell’s you love. They offer Ezell’s chicken strips, wingettes, rolls (in a slightly smaller size), and French fries.

Davidson says they’re planning on a full fleet, but want to get operations running smoothly with this first truck before they expand.

Ezell’s Express can be found at Starbucks’ SoDo headquarters every Thursday, with more scheduled locations to come.

To find out where they’re parked every day, check the Facebook page, which they update frequently. If you’d like to see Ezell’s Express in your neighborhood, Davidson says shoot an email to ezellsexpress@hotmail.com.

“We want to make sure we’re listening to the community and where you want to see us,” says Davidson.

Let’s Eat airs on KIRO Radio Saturdays at 4 p.m. and Sundays at noon. Listen anytime ON DEMAND at KIRORadio.com.
