An SUV speeding down hill near Lake Sammammish Monday morning launched off an embankment, hit a tree, and then burst into flames.

The driver died at the scene.

Though it is believed the driver was the only one in the vehicle, King County Search and Rescue and Redmond police searched the surrounding area to be sure.

Police say the SUV crashed through a guardrail at the intersection of Northeast 24th Street and West Lake Sammamish Parkway Northwest.

KIRO 7 reports the SUV was stuck in a tree, making removal of the vehicle difficult. Law enforcement debated whether to send in a helicopter to pull it out. The alternative would be to move it down hill and remove via barge.

A previous version of this report incorrectly referenced Lake Washington. The SUV sped down a hill near Lake Sammamish.
