Violent crime nationwide fell for the fifth straight year in 2011, down 4.5 percent from the year before, according to new data from the FBI. Property crime dropped for the ninth year in a row, down 1.3 percent per 100,000 people.

The rate of violent crime and property crime in Washington state is also down, falling 6.0 percent and 3.4 percent respectively.

The annual “Crime in the United States” report collects data on specific crimes, such as murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft.

While crime statewide was down on average, several cities saw increases in violence.

In Seattle, there was a slight increase in the number of murders/non-negligent manslaughters, with 19 in 2010 compared to 20 in 2011. Rapes, aggravated assaults, and burglaries were also up.

The number of rapes in Bellevue more than doubled over the same period, from 10 to 23.

Tukwila, Lakewood, and Tacoma were the most violent Washington cities per capita in 2011.
