Fire crews prevented a smoky fire from spreading at a business in the Westgate neighborhood of Edmonds Saturday morning.
At around 5:45 a.m., South County firefighters responded after 911 callers reported smoke in the area.
The fire was not visible from the street, but crews noticed condensation was building up on windows at the Gyro Makers restaurant in the Westgate Village commercial center.
Firefighters got inside and discovered heavy smoke and flames inside the unoccupied business.
Firefighters sprayed water on the fire and had it under control in about ten minutes.
Other crew members kept the fire from spreading to other nearby businesses.
The restaurant was heavily damaged.
A nail salon and spa next to it also sustained moderate damage.
South County Fire officials say, because the first arriving crew noticed the condensation and due to their perseverance in finding the fire, they played a key role in making sure the fire didn’t spread to several other businesses.
One firefighter suffered a minor injury and was evaluated on scene, but returned to duty.
No one else was hurt.
Approximately 16 fire engines and other units responded to get the fire under control.
The Shoreline Fire Department also assisted in putting the fire out.
Investigators are still looking for the cause.
Fire crews have been having trouble with vehicles driving over hoses at emergency response scenes.
South County Fire released the following statement on its Facebook page:
We remind everyone – please avoid driving over hoses at the scene of a fire. This can burst or drag the hose, causing injuries and possibly damaging your vehicle. Thanks for your patience and extra care during firefighting operations.”
