Thursday morning through the afternoon, Sound Transit’s Roosevelt and University District light rail stations closed due to a fire safety system outage that began around 11 a.m. that morning. As of 5 p.m., that service has resumed, a Sound Transit spokesperson tells MyNorthwest.

The outage closed service between the University of Washington and Northgate stations. Crews are currently on the scene investigating and troubleshooting the outage.

In November, the University District Station was the scene of another closure: hundreds of passengers returning from the Apple Cup suddenly stopped on the tracks, forcing passengers to use emergency exits and enter the tunnels after a lack of official communication between the passengers and conductor.

Sound Transit failed to perform crucial safety checks before Apple Cup incident, CEO says

Sound Transit would report in February that the load of the train was such that it sagged too low on the tracks, exposing electrical conduits that struck an exposed bolt, severing power and communication lines.

“Sound Transit’s performance that night was inexcusable,” Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff said at the time. “We apologize to our riders, again, for the errors leading up to and during this incident, and we commit to doing better.”
