A fatal house fire broke out Friday morning in Seattle’s View Ridge neighborhood, killing a 93-year-old resident.

Seattle Fire crews responded to reports of a deck fire just before 7:30 a.m. Friday. The two-story home was located in the 7300 block of 53rd Avenue N.E.

When firefighters arrived, flames were coming from the roof before the fire spread to all floors of the house.

The caller was able to evacuate safely as firefighters responded, but heavy smoke and debris hampered the firefighters’ search operations, and crews had to pull back.

Once the fire was under control, they reentered the building and found the caller’s 93-year-old mother, who did not survive.

No other injuries were reported, and no other damage was inflicted on neighboring homes.

It is not yet known what caused the fire to start on the home’s deck. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

This is a developing story, check back for updates
