Fireworks show will go in Poulsbo

The fireworks will go off Tuesday night in Poulsbo despite
an explosion that destroyed the city’s explosive supply.

The fireworks were sitting in a shipping container at the
local junkyard where Robert Nitz, who’s in charge of
putting together the fireworks show, was storing his
supply.

Organizer of the annual July 3rd festival, Ron Krell, told
Dave Ross and Luke Burbank Nitz had just received his
$80,000 order for displays in Poulsbo, Bainbridge Island,
and Whaling Days in Silverdale.

Last week, the junkyard’s owner decided to show off his
new rifle to his daughter and fired off a shot at a beat
up car. The bullet ricocheted and hit the shipping
container, igniting all of the fireworks for this year and
part of next year’s shows.

Krell said Nitz jumped on the phone and was able to secure
enough fireworks to make sure the shows go on in Poulsbo,
Bainbridge Island, and Silverdale, but he’s still out
$80,000.

Krell said they plan to ask spectators for donations
during the festivities.

“There are some 800 boats that moor in Liberty Bay for the
fireworks show every year. We’re going to send as many
boats as I can muster, right now I have one or maybe two,
and they’re going to circle those
boats with Miss Viking Fest on board collecting money.”

The owner of the junkyard has apologized and has told Nitz
he’ll make it right.
