Second flu-related child death in WA this season reported in Kitsap County

The Kitsap Public Health District (KPHD) confirmed Wednesday that a young child in Kitsap County died from an influenza-associated illness in January.
There have now been two flu-associated pediatric deaths reported in Washington for the 2025-2026 flu season, KPHD announced.

Flu positivity rates in Kitsap County jumped since December
KPHD noted that emergency department visits associated with the flu have increased in the county and in Washington since December.
In early December, 3.9% of specimens tested for influenza at Kitsap County labs were positive. In late January, that number skyrocketed to more than 22% of tests returning positive results.
The department noted that young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with health conditions are especially at risk for severe illness from flu.
“The death of any child is a profound tragedy, and our thoughts are with the family and loved ones,” KPHD Health Officer Dr. Herbie Duber said. “We don’t always think of flu as a serious illness, but it can be life-threatening for community members, especially those who are at higher risk of severe disease, and we can all take steps to help protect them.”
Although flu activity generally peaks in late winter and begins to decline in the spring, Dr. Duber stated that it is not too late to get a flu vaccine.
“We are still very much in the midst of flu season,” Dr. Duber said. “If you are at risk for severe illness, I highly recommend you get a flu shot.”
Yearly flu vaccines are recommended for all people ages 6 months and older and are widely available at clinics and pharmacies.
