Health officials are warning families to throw out a brand of powdered infant formula because it can cause botulism in babies.
But unfortunately, it could take weeks before you’ll know if your baby’s been contaminated.
Symptoms can take several weeks to show up in infants.
The recalled brand is “Nara Organics Whole Milk” infant formula.
It has been sold in Washington state at Target stores.
The product was also available online at Nara.com.
If you have any unopened cans, throw them away or return them to the store.
The Centers for Disease Control also says you should wash any surfaces that have come into contact with the formula.
Doctors advise parents to watch for symptoms in their babies, including poor feeding, loss of head control, difficulty swallowing, or decreased facial expression.
On Saturday, medical authorities said three infants have been reported in the outbreak from three states:  California, Pennsylvania, and Washington.
They range in age from two to five months.
All three had consumed Nara Organics Whole Milk Infant Formula.
The CDC says all three babies were given a treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration known as “BabyBIG,” which is designed to help babies recover from botulism.
Medical labs will begin testing both opened and unopened cans of Nara Organics formula.
Results are expected in the coming weeks.
Experts say families and caregivers should immediately stop using the formula.
Anyone who has leftover, opened cans of the product should take a photo, record the lot number, and note the use-by date.
If an infant develops symptoms consistent with botulism, state health department officials may want to test any containers that have been opened.
To learn more about the outbreak, to to the agency’s website at CDC Safety Alert.
