A natural gas leak in Seattle’s Madison Park was secured after five hours.

A Puget Sound Energy (PSE) spokesperson told KIRO Newsradio it was difficult for crews to get close to the leak.

“What took so long was our crews could not get close to the leak itself for safety reasons, so they had to find another way to shut off the gas,” the spokesperson stated. “This brings the challenge of pinpointing the right line to shut off.”

The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) first reported the leak around 9:30 a.m.

“A 3/4 inch underground natural gas line was damaged in the 4100 block of E. Madison St.,” SFD stated on X.

Crews evacuated the impacted buildings, and the surrounding area was blocked off.

“Our crews are on-scene, and the gas is still blowing while crews work to find a safe way to shut it off,” the spokesperson told KIRO Newsradio. “Once we’ve achieved shutoff, we’ll begin our investigation and assess the damage before repairing.”

PSE works to shut off gas leak

At 1 p.m., PSE said crews were still unable to shut off the gas safely.

“We’re still working to figure out a way to do so safely,” the spokesperson stated.

Around 2:30 p.m., the fire department reported that PSE secured the leak.

“Firefighters are working on ventilating the impacted buildings,” SFD stated.
