Google targets Amazon with launch of its own tablet

Jun 27, 2012, 9:40 AM | Updated: 2:01 pm

The tablet wars are heating up again as Google has unveiled
a device of its own, and its a huge threat to
Amazon’s Kindle Fire.

The Nexus 7 tablet features a screen measuring 7-inches
diagonally, the exact same size as the Fire. But the HD
screen resolution is 1280 x 800, slightly better than the
Fire. The Google offering will also feature a front-facing
1.2-megapixel camera and microphone for video chatting, a
micro USB port, GPS, near-field communication and both Wi-Fi
and Bluetooth. The company says it can provide up to nine
hours of video playback.

Pricing starts at $199 and orders are being taken now at
the Google Play store, with the company saying deliveries
will begin sometime in mid-July.

Google also unveiled the Nexus Q, a $300 orb-shaped “social
streaming media player” that can be connected to your TV
to stream movies, TV shows, and music from Google Play and
YouTube, indicating the company isn’t trying to
directly take on Apple’s iPad or Microsoft’s recently
announced Surface tablet.
