MyNorthwest reports on overnight crime in the Puget Sound region on the morning of June 29: a Bellevue church was vandalized by a pro-abortion advocate, police are searching for two men involved in a carjacking in Kirkland, and teens fail to steal underwear at South Hill Mall.

Bellevue Church Vandalized

A man has been taken into custody for vandalizing a Catholic church in Bellevue on Tuesday.

The man was seen spray-painting a statue of the Virgin Mary on the exterior of the church, as well as smashing two glass doors.

Bellevue Police Captain Darryl McKinney spoke to KIRO 7 about the gravity of the crime.

“We all have the right to free speech: marching and stating our beliefs. But there’s a line that can be crossed pretty easily. And it’s never okay to damage people’s property, injure somebody, or attack somebody. No matter what your beliefs are,” McKinney said.

Father Gary Zender, the priest at St. Louise Parish, offered words of forgiveness and empathy to the perpetrator.

“A lot of people are hurting,” Zender said. “Including the man who did this. So just on the human level, I connect with that struggle.”

The man was taken to a hospital for injuries sustained while smashing the glass doors and has been taken to jail.

Bellevue police have announced that they are increasing their patrols in the area, and the area around other local churches.

Carjacking in Kirkland

Kirkland Police are currently investigating an armed robbery and carjacking that happened early Tuesday morning at 1:15 a.m.

A woman reported that she was approached by two men wearing ski masks, one with a gun, at the 12300 block of NE 130th Lane.

They stole her bag and car keys at gunpoint and took her car, a grey Chevy Cruze with temporary license plates.

The police are asking the public for any assistance in catching the criminals.

Property dispute turned shooting in Marysville

In a residential neighborhood of Marysville, police were called to the scene of a shooting, after two roommates got into an argument over a transaction.

The tone of the argument changed when one of the two men, both in their late 30s, pulled out what is described in the police report as a “sword or large knife” and slashed the other.

In response, the other man pulled out a legally acquired firearm and shot the other in self-defense.

When police arrived at the scene, they took both men to the hospital, detaining the man who had been shot. He has since been booked for second-degree assault.

Underwear robbery in Puyallup

Two 16-year-olds have allegedly shoplifted underwear from the South Hill Mall in broad daylight.

When confronted by mall security just before 5 p.m., the two produced a gun and pointed it at the security officer before fleeing to a nearby parking lot.

Police located the pair, and arrested them on robbery charges.

Update on Tuesday’s shooting in Tacoma

Police have now arrested a 58-year-old man in connection with the shooting at the 800 block of E 65th St in Tacoma.

He is being charged with second-degree murder and the unlawful possession of a firearm.

Police received a call Monday night that someone had been shot.

When they arrived they found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest, and medics attempted to save the man’s life.
