The Space Needle team warned Seattleites that strong winds on Tuesday could force a cancellation of the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks show. As the clock struck 12 a.m., a light show serving as a backup alternative kicked off without even the slightest explosion.

Appropriately, maybe, the light show ended after 12 minutes on Justin Bieber’s “Sorry.” Coincidentally (or not), the pop star will be in Seattle in May to kick off his 2020 tour.

The Space Needle tweeted that it would consider a fireworks show at 2 a.m. if the winds died down, but they were still too strong.

“Due to high winds, we are still unable to proceed with the fireworks display at 2:00am on January 1,” the Space Needle team tweeted. “Unfortunately, this calls for the cancellation of this year’s display.”

One Seattleite tweeted that they should save them for Sunday, following a Seahawks win.

Twitter was a mixed bag of disappointment and joy over the light show.
