House passes bill to make childcare facilities gun-free zones

The House passed a bill Tuesday that would expand the same prohibitions on deadly weapons to childcare facilities as K-12 schools in Washington state.

Gun control bills clear hurdles in Olympia

“This will give our younger children similar protections to school-age youths,” Sen. Claire Wilson (D-Auburn), the bill’s sponsor, said in a news release. “No parent wants to be notified that guns have been fired on grounds where their child is being cared for.”

Senate Bill 5434 would prohibit the possession of firearms on the premises of any licensed childcare center, childcare center provided-transportation, or other childcare center facility. However, SB-5434 was amended by the House to exempt law enforcement officers and holders of concealed pistol licenses.

SB-5434 now returns to the Senate to reconcile differences between the two versions. The bill would then move on to the governor to be signed into law.
