An infant formula has been recalled after a Thurston County baby’s illness was linked to infant botulism.

Officials are investigating an outbreak of botulism linked to powdered infant formula produced by Nara Organics out of New York, according to a news release from Thurston County on Monday.

Three infants in three states have been affected by the outbreak. Nara Organics subsequently voluntarily recalled the formula.

Thurston County officials warned the public not to use any recently purchased formula from Nara Organics, specifically Nara Organics Whole Milk Infant Formula.

“Throw it away or return it to where you bought it,” the news release stated. “If you still have the container, record the lot number before discarding.”

Consumers are also urged to wash any items or surfaces that may have touched the formula, using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.

Symptoms of infant botulism

If an infant has consumed Nara Organics Infant Formula and has any of the symptoms — poor feeding, loss of head control, difficulty swallowing, or decreased facial expression — seek immediate medical care.

“Symptoms of infant botulism can take as long as several weeks to develop, so parents should remain vigilant if they used the recalled lots of infant formula,” officials stated.

Infant botulism is a rare illness that usually affects babies less than six months of age, according to Thurston County. Babies become ill when the bacteria they ingested produce a toxin that can weaken their muscles.

The bacteria are naturally found in dust, soil, and honey, which officials noted should never be given to a baby under a year old.

Thurston County said it is rare for a commercial infant food product to be linked to an outbreak of infant botulism. Officials added that the recall is unrelated to a similar recall last November.

For current updates on the recent outbreak, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website.
