An early morning landslide occurred near an Interbay apartment complex, with crews assessing damage and possible safety measures.

At approximately 7:45 a.m., the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) began to work on the hole that was found underneath the apartment building, according to KIRO 7.

SFD crews removed debris from the nearby drains before assigning the work to the Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections (SDCI) and Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) for further evaluation of the building.

The City of Seattle noted that residents were told to use the west-side walking path until temporary fixes are made, following a Geotechnical Engineer’s assessment.

“While we don’t know the exact cause of this particular landslide, it’s a good reminder for property owners on steep hillsides to conduct routine inspections during the wet season for signs of erosion and to ensure drainage systems are functioning,” the City of Seattle said, according to KIRO 7. “Large cracks in the soil or newly leaning trees are signs of soil movement, which could cause a slide. If a landslide damages your property, leave the premises and call 911.”
