Washington drivers continue to lead the nation in the use of seat belts.
The latest figures from the federal government show that 97.5 percent of Washington drivers buckle-up.
“We would love to see 100 percent, especially when it comes to collisions involving occupants that aren’t wearing seat belts. They’ve seen the long term injuries and even unnecessary deaths that have occurred,” explains Darrin Grondel, director of the state Traffic Safety Commission.
He credits our state’s seat belt law, as well as tough enforcement and public education.
The lowest rate of seat belt usage among states and U.S. territories was Massachusetts at 73 percent.
The statistics for 2011 come from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and are based on personal observation studies.
