The Secretary of the Army will be at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and it’s expected he will announce a major shakeup at the base.
The Army base has not had a division headquarters for 21 years. The 9th Infantry Division was deactivated in 1991, but it’s expected Army Secretary John McHugh will announce the formation of a new division at JBLM Thursday.
That would mean more soldiers and officers, including a high-ranking general, possibly a two star.
Experts say the Army has wanted a division headquarters at the base for years to give more support and direction to the Stryker Brigades who currently report to a headquarters in South Korea.
The base has doubled in size in the last decade, and it’s one of the largest Army bases in the U.S. without a division headquarters.
