While Seattle Public Schools students are out of class for Thanksgiving break this week, 3 miles of the Lake Washington Boulevard will be closed to pass-through traffic.

Instead, it will be open for people walking, rolling, and biking. The 3-mile closure extends from Mount Baker Park to Seward Park along Lake Washington Boulevard. Parking lots will be open.

The Seattle Department of Transportation says that based on community feedback, barricades will be installed after 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, and removed by 7 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29.

This portion of Lake Washington Boulevard was one of the “Keep Moving Streets” opened during the pandemic to allow space for people to get outside and get moving, while staying distanced from others. SDOT says that the street was closed for Seattle Public Schools breaks during the 2020-2021 school year and it was found that “significant” numbers of people took advance of the space to walk, bike, and roll.

The Keep Moving Street was made possible by COVID emergency funds, so SDOT says the department has lacked funding to explore the right balance of closures and possible permanent changes to promote pedestrian and bicycle use of the street.

Last summer, data was collected on people walking and biking on this Keep Moving Street, as well as counts of people driving on nearby streets. Find the full report here.
