A large scrap pile fire at PNW Metals in Longview sent a massive plume of smoke into the sky Saturday, prompting fire officials to issue an air quality warning urging nearby residents to stay indoors.

The Longview Fire Department and Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue were on scene as of Saturday afternoon and anticipated remaining for several hours to bring the blaze under control.

“Residents and businesses in the surrounding neighborhoods are encouraged to stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed, and avoid breathing the smoke whenever possible,” the Longview Fire Department said in a Facebook post. “If you have respiratory conditions, asthma, or other health concerns, please take extra precautions and remain inside until conditions improve.”
