Rebecca Thornton has been named the newest member of Lynnwood’s City Council, replacing Julieta Altamirano-Crosby, who resigned in January to join the Snohomish County Public Utility District as a commissioner. She will be sworn-in at the council’s Monday night meeting.

The Lynnwood City Council appointment process began with 19 applicants and a shortlist of eight candidates. After one candidate dropped out, the council interviewed seven applicants on Tuesday. On Thursday evening, a brief five-minute executive session resulted in a unanimous decision to select Thornton.

Thornton has called Lynnwood home since 2019. During her interview, the mother of two spoke about her commitment to community. She works at the University of Washington as an assistant director in the business school’s consulting and business development center.

The incoming Lynnwood City Council member also expressed her readiness to dive into city budgeting and affirmed her support for the upcoming 2025 property tax levy, noting that while taxing residents is never an easy task, it’s sometimes necessary for community well-being.
