A student at Meadowdale High School in Lynnwood who collapsed during his physical education class Friday morning has died, according to a letter sent to parents by the school.
The student has been identified as Matthew Truax, according to a family with ties to the school.
“Matthew was in third period PE class when he collapsed. Staff, paramedics and hospital staff responded but were unable to revive him,” Meadowdale principal Kevin Allen wrote in the letter to parents. “His family asks that they be given time to grieve privately. Those who knew Matthew knew him as a respectful, hard-working young man who was serious about his education; an all-around nice kid who we will miss. I know you join us in sending his family our deepest condolences during this difficult time.”
Grief counselors from the Edmonds School District were being made available to students, Allen said.
The school did not release any other details.
A teacher was performing CPR on the student when medics arrived, according to the Lynnwood Fire Department. The boy died at the hospital.
