Macklemore’s latest video has nothing to do with music. But the Seattle hip-hop star is still getting plenty of attention for his unconventional talk about civil rights.

The video is an endorsement for the American Civil Liberties Union. In it Macklemore touts the work of the ACLU, raising eyebrows by endorsing the ACLU membership card.

The rapper, who penned the gay marriage anthem “Same Love”, says in the video it’s the member card that “that lets my gay friends marry the (expletive) out of each other.”

“There is no other organization that I believe in more. The tireless work of the ACLU to preserve the freedoms of all people in our country inspires my music and my deepest connection to my human community,” Macklemore says.

The ACLU says the effort is an attempt to raise awareness with young adults and teens.

“To be in a position where young people look to me for their own ideas about equality makes this opportunity even more important. I am forever grateful for everything that the ACLU has done and continues to do,” Macklemore says.

The video has a healthy dose of tongue-in-cheek humor.
It’s “the card that lets me call the president a (expletive) on the internet if I wanted to, and I don’t want to. But I could,” he says.

The ACLU is offering special t-shirts and a chance to win tickets and a meet-and-greet to see Macklemore perform live at KeyArena Dec. 12.
