Seattle police arrested a man in the Central District on Tuesday morning after he stole an unoccupied school bus and rammed it into vehicles while fleeing from officers.

Police say they received a report at 7:51 a.m. that someone had taken an empty bus near South Horton and Colorado Avenue South. The suspect then drove through SODO, swerving across traffic, running red lights, and appeared to purposefully ram other vehicles.

The suspect headed east, reaching Rainier and McClellen, police say, ramming more vehicles.

Due to a risk to the public, police pursued the suspect, who is said to have reached speeds of more than 50 miles an hour. While he was fleeing, the suspect struck a King County Metro bus and later crashed into a light rail station construction site.

The suspect fled from the stolen bus a short distance away and was quickly arrested.

Several major roads will be partially or fully closed, including the northbound lanes of 23rd Avenue from Dearborn to King Street, as police continued to investigate. The suspect will be booked for vehicular assault and auto theft.

Police say the suspect is believed to be a bus service employee, who was not authorized to drive buses.
