A man who investigators said was armed died after being shot by deputies Friday morning in Pierce County.

Deputies responded about 1 a.m. to a vehicle crash near Eatonville on State Route 7 near 384th Street East.

Three deputies fired, a spokeswoman said. The man died at the scene. No deputies were injured.

Witness Jamie Armstrong said he thought the driver fired three shots and deputies fired back. Armstrong, who stayed behind his truck during the shooting, said he thought he heard eight shots.

The incident is being investigated by Tacoma police. Transportation officials told drivers Friday morning to avoid both directions of State Route 7, which was closed during the investigation.
