A car plummeted into Puget Sound from the Southworth ferry terminal late Friday afternoon, killing a man and halting ferry service to the Kitsap County terminal.

An eyewitness at the scene reported via Twitter a driver in a black SUV sped through the gate and plunged into the water around 6:15 p.m.

Emergency crews raced to the scene as rescue divers tried to get to the vehicle, estimated to be approximately 60 feet deep.

Divers pulled a lone male body from the water approximately one hour later, Washington State Patrol trooper Russ Winger said. Despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead.
