Man drowns in Lake Washington at Seafair

Aug 5, 2013, 8:36 AM | Updated: 11:03 am

Seafair weekend on Lake Washington was marred by a drowning Saturday afternoon. Seattle police say a 26-year-old man fell off a boat just north of Seward Park.

“The deceased was on a boat and fell down, apparently hit his head and then fell into the water,” says Seattle Police Detective Jeff Kappel.

Searchers didn’t find his body until around 9 p.m. Saturday evening. Kappel says police continue to investigate.

“Alcohol may have played a factor in this incident. It remains an active and ongoing investigation.”

The Washington State Patrol reports an impaired boating emphasis patrol turned up 34 BUI’s over 473 boats contacted throughout Seafair weekend.

Fifteen boaters on the water also refused a breathalyzer test, which is a $2,050 infraction.

KIRO TV reports the number of BUI’s this year was down from 61 last year. There were reportedly fewer boats out on the water this year.
