Man headed to drug court allegedly stole Maple Valley mayor’s van

May 7, 2013, 8:02 AM | Updated: 8:04 am

A man in need of a ride to drug court could not have made a poorer choice of vehicles to steal in order to get to his court date. He allegedly stole a van belonging to the mayor of Maple Valley.

A deputy pulling the van over for a traffic violation recognized the vehicle.

“One of our Maple Valley officers pulled up and recognized the van as belonging to the mayor of Maple Valley,” says King County Sheriff’s Sgt. Cindi West.

West says the mayor wasn’t aware yet that the van had been stolen, but he confirmed to authorities that it was missing.

“We contacted the mayor and found out his van had in fact been stolen,” says West. “I believe it was us that had alerted him that it had been stolen.”

West says the suspect, who has a suspended license and an outstanding warrant, told deputies that he took the van from a parking lot in order to get to drug court.
