Man lies about ‘serial killer’ attack in Bremerton

Apr 6, 2012, 7:17 AM | Updated: 12:01 pm

Police in Bremerton, Wash., believed an attack Tuesday
could have been related to an ongoing investigation into a
possible serial killer, but now say the supposed victim
made the whole thing up.

Jonathan Hirschy, 18, reported to police that a man with a
knife had attacked him.

“The initial information led the police department to
believe that this reported attack could possibly be
related to our ongoing investigating of two murders and a
serious attack,” said the Bremerton Police Department.

Surrounding law enforcement agencies, a police K-9, and
multiple off-duty detectives we called to the scene to
investigate.

“After many hours of investigation, Hirschy admitted to
fabricating this reported crime,” police said in a
statement. “Hirschy’s fabrication of this attack resulted
in a significant deployment of police resources and
unnecessarily raised fears in a community that is already
in a heightened state of alertness.”

Hirschy has been charged in Bremerton Municipal Court with
false reporting and making a false or misleading statement
to a public servant.

Police are still searching for a suspect who they believe
has killed two women and seriously injured a man over the
past 10 months. Sara Burke, 19, was stabbed to death last
May and Melody Brannon was killed February 3. Kenny Cobb,
51, was attacked last June, but survived.
