Man wanted on felony warrant recognized on street by jail guard

Dec 13, 2012, 2:00 PM | Updated: 2:38 pm

A 10-hour, multi-agency police operation Wednesday netted 24 arrests in Whatcom County, including a man wanted for a kidnapping just a few days earlier.

“Operation Chimney Sweep” involved a team of local, state and federal officers and agents fanning out across the county, knocking on doors, going after gang members and other high risk suspects.

One of the best arrests happened almost by chance as corrections staff was shuttling prisoners to and from the jail. Jail Chief Wendy Jones says a veteran guard, Todd Greenhalgh, spotted a familiar face on the street.

“And deputy Greenhalgh, who has worked in the jail for quite a number of years, recognized Mr. Craver walking alongside the road so they pulled the transport vehicle over and placed him into custody,” said Jones.

James Craver was wanted on multiple felony charges, including kidnapping and domestic violence assault.

The emphasis targeted gangs, including members of the Bloods, Crips, Brown Pride Surenos, Tiny Rascals and Insane Clown Posse.

Since 2011, four warrant sweeps in Whatcom County have led to 64 arrests.
