A wine production facility caught fire near Mattawa on Tuesday, with 4.5 million gallons of wine inside it.

The fire generated a massive response from several agencies as thick smoke clouds covered the area in the 22000 block of State Route 243 S., the Grant County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) announced.

6 agencies contain blaze near Mattawa as pressurized equipment inside poses safety hazards

A passerby initially saw the smoke at about 2:30 p.m. and reported the fire to Grant County Fire District 8, public information officer Kyle Foreman told The Tri-City Herald.

The fire broke out inside the Central Washington Wine Production Group and UpWest Wine Tasting Room building. GCSO noted there were no injuries as a result of the fire and no ongoing risk to the public.

The company focuses on bulk wine solutions made from grapes sourced from vineyards across the Columbia Valley AVA and the UpWest wine label, according to The Olympian.

The total joint response included GCSO, Grant County Fire District No. 3 and 8, Royal Slope Fire Rescue EMS, Hanford Fire Department, Grant Public Utility Department, and Grant County Fire Marshal’s Office.

All employees within the building were safely evacuated, and the fire was under control by 5 p.m. A fire marshal is expected to investigate the cause of the fire.

Foreman said the pressurized stainless-steel wine production equipment inside the building posed a safety hazard, but firefighters successfully extinguished the fire, according to The Olympian.
