Millions throughout the western U.S. practiced their drop, cover and hold earthquake skills on Thursday.

Over 710,000 people in Washington state registered to participate in the Great Shakeout October Earthquake Drill.

The drill meant to emphasize the importance of emergency preparedness at home, school and the work-place took place at 10:18 a.m.

Participants were encouraged to drop to the ground, take cover by finding a sturdy desk or a table, and hold on until the shaking stops.

Shakeout.org also provides a list of other recommended safety actions, should you be somewhere you’re not able to find a table or a get to a corner, like in bed, or in a store.

This is the first year for a Shakeout drill in Washington.
