The newborn critically injured after a suspected drunk driver plowed into a family in north Seattle turned one-month-old on Monday. Elias Schulte is still at Harborview Medical Center in serious but stable condition, showing signs of improvement.

Elias is now breathing on his own, without a breathing tube. According to his father, Dan, the infant and his mom, Karina, saw each other face-to-face last weekend for the first time since the accident last month.

In a blog post on the Caring Bridge website, Dan Schulte says Karina clearly reacted to seeing Elias and he thinks it will be a “trigger point” to speed up her recovery. He also says they still have a long road ahead and is thankful for everyone’s continued support.

Karina and Elias have been at Harborview since March 25, when they were hit while crossing a street in the Wedgewood neighborhood. Dan’s parents were killed at the scene.

The suspected repeat drunk driver, Mark Mullan, is in jail on $2.5 million bail.
