It may be counterintuitive, but the break in rain has given way to new trees sprouting up in Seattle.

More progress has been made on the new tree design that will grace the top of the Space Needle until the spring of 2013.

The new look was designed by 29-year-old Nicole Commins. She won the right to makeover the Needle in a contest #TopThis over the summer. The Space Needle was painted galaxy gold to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

In a note included with her entry in the contest, Commins said, “The city is inspiration in itself. Picture our [city’s] beautiful skyline, with its unique Space Needle, painted a top, beautiful, vibrant shades of green.”

The tree design will cover the iconic Seattle landmark for the next six months. The Space Needle’s President and CEO, Ron Sevart, said Commins’ design will help point Seattle toward the next 50 years.

“This really is a nod to our heritage. We were built as a symbol of the future, born of the imagination of a few and embraced by the world,” said Sevart.

Rain will likely return on Wednesday, and stay for the rest of the week, making it unclear when transition to green along Seattle’s skyline might be finished.
