Most voters think the state’s transportation system is in decent shape and they don’t like a plan to increase the gas tax.

The results of a Stuart Elway poll show that 72 percent of voters oppose a plan by House Democrats to raise the gas tax $0.10 over five years. Another 62 percent of voters say “no” to plans for a car tab, or motor vehicle excise tax.

The funding proposal would raise almost $10 billion for transportation projects.

The Elway poll questioned 412 registered voters last week.

When Elway pollsters asked voters to rate the state’s transportation system, 70 percent said it was “satisfactory” or better.
