Nation’s largest food drive starts at your mailbox

Donating food for millions of hungry Americans couldn’t be
easier this weekend.
Postal carriers around the nation are collecting your food
bank donations right at your mailbox on Saturday, May 12.
Simply leave
non-perishable food items in a sack at your mailbox.
Your mail carrier will then collect all of the donations
and make sure they get to the food bank.
“The Postal Service is pleased to continue supporting the
National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) as we enter
our 20th year together to help Stamp Out Hunger in
America,”
says Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe. “I am confident
the
2012 campaign will be our best ever because the need
continues to grow.”
According to the U.S. Postal Service, the annual food
drive is the largest single-day food drive in the nation
and has collected more
than one billion pounds of food since its inception in
1993. Last year, Americans donated more than 70 million
pounds of food.
Examples of non-perishable items include:
Canned soup
Canned meats and fish
Canned vegetables, fruits and juices
Boxed goods (such as cereal)
Pasta and rice
