The USS John S. McCain is now docked at its new homeport, Naval Station Everett.

The guided missile destroyer had been stationed in Tokyo Bay for 24 years.

The warship was originally named after John McCain, Senior and Junior, who were both Navy admirals.

They are also grandfather and father of Vietnam War Navy captain and later U.S. Senator John McCain. In 2018, one month before Senator McCain died, the destroyer’s name was rededicated to honor all three men.

“John S. McCain and her Sailors have proven time and time again our Navy’s resolve to answer the call in support of our nation and our allies,” the ship’s skipper, Cmdr. Tin Tran, said in a Navy news release ahead of the trip to Everett. “After 24 years of faithful overseas service, we are ready to head back home to America, back to Washington State. Our sailors will forever remember the bonds of friendship and hospitality Japan has shown us.”

The USS McCain will be replaced by the USS Ralph Johnson, which is on its way to Japan.
