A popular show on Netflix about de-cluttering is boosting donations at thrift stores across the country, including in Washington state.

In the last month, the manager at Save Thrift Store in Gig Harbor said the store has not only had a spike in donations, but it’s also getting more variety in the kinds of things being given away.

The store is getting more old toys than ever and usual donations of one bag of clothes at a time has increased to four to six bags in some cases.

Some people are telling the store they’ve been inspired by the Netflix show “Tidying up with Marie Kando,” which focuses on how decluttering your house can change your life.

“We are getting brand new clothes that still have tags on them, so you know, I think people have stuff in their closet and now they are realizing they are never going to wear this and they are giving it to us,” said Save Thrift Store manager Kendra Zartman.

KIRO 7 also spoke with someone at Goodwill Olympic Peninsula who said the store has also seen its donation numbers jump almost 10 percent from this time last year and sales increase more than 5 percent.

Reporter Patranya Bhoolsuwan also called a number of other thrift stores which said they all heard about the Netflix show from their customers.
