Wintry weather causing power outages across the region

Nov 29, 2022, 8:50 AM | Updated: Nov 30, 2022, 5:29 am

Snow is heavy in Snohomish County. Now, power outages are edging into the equation.

The snow is ending for at least a time from Seattle south to Olympia. North of Shoreline through Lynnwood and up to Everett a few inches of snow is falling. Up at the passes, they are measuring snow in feet not inches and officials are asking people not to travel if they don’t have to.

80,000 people are without power across the region, as of 5:08 a.m. Wednesday.

Puget Sound Energy has 31,172 customers without power in areas scattered across the Puget Sound region. Snohomish PUD is reporting 41,601 customers without power in areas scattered across Snohomish County. Seattle City Light is reporting 8,793 customers without power, primarily in Northgate, Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

There are no significant outages in Tacoma Public Utilities’ service area at this time.

“We will be in this rain vs. snow tug of war throughout the week,” Ted Buehner, KIRO Newsradio meteorologist, said. “We are having our third La Niña winter in a row. This is pretty typical of that.”

The National Weather Service in Seattle is reporting wind is now roaring in from the south. Gusts could reach 40-50 miles per hour overnight.

Morgan Palmer, chief meteorologist for KIRO 7 News, says to watch out around the Hood Canal and Highway 101 where snow and howling winds will continue.

The weather had a big impact on air travelers Monday. At Sea-Tac Airport, 183 flights were canceled and 498 were delayed, according to FlightAware. 12,000 people were impacted.

De-icing aircraft made it difficult for planes to leave and arrive. Some passengers told KIRO 7 News they were waiting on the tarmac for two hours while gates opened up.
