Norwegian Sun, a Norwegian Cruise Line ship, struck an iceberg off of the Alaskan Coast on Saturday. The ship originally launched out of Seattle and is expected to return, ahead of schedule, Thursday for repairs.

Beginning of cruise season is a welcomed sight in Seattle

While on route to Hubbard Glacier, the ship “made contact” with a “growler,” a small glacier, a spokesperson with Norwegian Cruise Line told KIRO Newsradio.

The ship has been granted permission to sail back to Seattle from the U.S. Coast Guard, albeit at a reduced speed.

Passengers reported heavy fog that obscured vision before the accident and heard shuddering and rattling noises immediately after.

The ship had originally planned to dock at Skagway, Alaska, but that leg of the trip has been canceled, according to Norweigan Cruise Line.
