On Election Night, King County sheriff jokes about a bus to Canada

The joke was made to perhaps lighten the mood a bit on Election Night, but what King County Sheriff John Urquhart said may have resonated with more people than he imagined.

KIRO 7’s Natasha Chen reported that Urquhart told a crowd of I-1491 supporters that there was a bus leaving to Canada.
While it may have been a joke, CBS News reports Google searches throughout the day moved from voting-related questions to immigrating to Canada. Two hours before polls closed on the West Coast, people were searching for “Canada immigration.” So much so that Canada’s immigration website crashed.
The website was up and running again early Wednesday morning, albeit fairly slow.
