One person died after a car drove off an overpass onto Interstate 5 near the Tacoma Dome Friday afternoon.

Witnesses reported seeing a Ford Explorer make a sharp right turn, crash through a guardrail and off the L Street overpass and onto the freeway.

Police said no one else was hurt and no other vehicles were involved. Tacoma police Sgt. Frank Richmond put it this way: “How you can do this and fall off the bridge and hit nothing in the middle of rush hour, I don’t know. But that’s what occurred.”

Traffic was reduced to one lane, causing at least a 12-mile backup to Federal Way, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
