Update: Two lanes of northbound I-5 in Tacoma reopened around 10:30 a.m. after a large pothole forced the state to do emergency maintenance.

Original story

A pothole in at least one northbound lane of I-5 through the Lakewood-Tacoma area is causing major delays for drivers.

Check current traffic conditions

Law enforcement is blocking the two right lanes of the freeway just north of State Route 512.

Washington State Trooper Brooke Bova described the pothole as “large” on twitter. The Washington State Department of Transportation described it as “pesky.”

KIRO Radio’s Chris Sullivan says the pothole may have caused some flat tires. There are no confirmed reports of damage.

Maintenance crews are repairing the roadway.
