Plane crash west of Whidbey Island kills 1, leaves 9 missing

A plane carrying nine adults and one child crashed Sunday afternoon in Mutiny Bay, west of Whidbey Island, according to the United States Coast Guard.

Crews responding to reports of the crash recovered one body. Nine individuals remain unaccounted for.

The plane departed from Friday Harbor, en route to the Seattle area.

The aircraft involved is a 55-year-old De Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter.

The Coast Guard received initial reports of the crash just after 3 p.m. Sunday.

Rescue and investigation efforts on behalf of the Coast Guard, South Whidbey Fire, Island County Sheriff’s Office, and Snohomish County Sheriff’s office are underway as of 9 p.m. Sunday, the Coast Guard confirmed in a breaking news release Sunday evening.

Update 9/5, 8:12 a.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed Monday morning that, despite conducting rescue operations throughout the night, “no additional individuals were recovered and no debris spotted,” the agency wrote in a news release.
