Plans for Sumner bridge replacements amidst Skagit bridge catastrophe

Jun 3, 2013, 7:46 AM | Updated: 7:54 am

The recent I-5 bridge collapse over the Skagit River may make a pair of planned bridge replacement projects in Sumner move a little more smoothly.

The Bridge Street bridge is a local landmark known for the Christmas lights that are displayed on its trusses each winter. Unfortunately, it’s nearly 100 years old and badly in need of replacement.

The City of Sumner has already secured funding to do the work, but according to the Tacoma News Tribune they had feared some local backlash over replacing the beloved relic. That may change in light of last month’s accident on I-5 over the Skagit River.

Sumner is also planning to place a bridge at Stewart Road and 8th Street, but they’ve secured just $1.2 of the $14 million they’ll need for that project.
