Seattle police detective, DOC specialist shoot suspect in Des Moines

A wanted fugitive was shot by the U.S. Marshal Fugitive Task Force on Wednesday near a Safeway grocery store on Pacific Highway South in Des Moines.

It was later clarified by the Seattle Police Department that a Seattle police detective and a Washington State Department of Corrections specialist shot and wounded a man Wednesday while attempting to arrest him on a felony warrant.

Des Moines police said law enforcement found the man — who was wanted on kidnapping charges — in the parking lot and he was the only person hurt. He was transferred to Harborview Medical Center for treatment.

No suspects are outstanding, no officers were injured, and there were no other shooting victims.

Police say the shooting took place at about 3:09 p.m., with a Seattle officer and a DOC officer said to be the ones who fired. Seattle’s Office of Police Accountability will be looking into the incident as is department policy.

Des Moines police officers did not fire shots.

On Oct. 29, detectives released available video in the ongoing shooting investigation. In the video, as SPD describes, you see plainclothes officers pull up to arrest the suspect at a gas station. Out of view of the camera, the suspect fires a single round before he flees through the parking lot with officers chasing him. As he attempts to enter a grocery store, officers open fire, striking the man. The suspect drops his firearm as he falls to the ground.

The SPD says detectives with the Force Investigations Team continue to investigate and will release additional information as it becomes available. The SPD officer has been placed on leave in accordance with department policy while the investigation is ongoing.
