The Port of Port Townsend has announced on social media that it will no longer use social media due to health concerns.

Executive director cites health risks, ‘isolation and disconnection’

In a Facebook post, Port Executive Director Eron Berg wrote, “social media is linked to decreased human health outcomes, isolation and disconnection.”

Berg cited “evidence in dozens of recent studies,” though he did not list any specific studies.

“It is also clear that social media has made it more difficult for people in community to maintain healthy relationships with each other and the entities which serve them,” Berg wrote. “Therefore, the Port of Port Townsend will no longer maintain active social media pages.”

Port urges residents: ‘Let’s just be people and talk’

Berg is encouraging people to visit the port’s website and check out local media outlets to stay up to date on what is happening at the port.

“For more complicated questions, concerns, and discussion about the port, call us or come see us in person,” Berg continued. “The Port Commission meets monthly and Port personnel are available in four offices in Jefferson County. Let’s just be people and talk — rather than post — especially about anything that seems difficult.”
