Puget Sound-area teachers raise concern over Netflix show

Apr 28, 2017, 11:49 AM

School districts are warning parents about a new Netflix Show, “13 Reasons Why,” which centers around a teen who commits suicide and leaves behind audio tapes for 13 people she says were part of the reason why.

Ed Herda, the principal of Auburn’s Lea Hill Elementary, sent a warning letter to parents after learning fourth and fifth graders were binge watching it.

“Kind of my main motivation was, hey, if I was a parent, I just would want to this was out there,” he said. “Because I know for myself, I was not aware this was out there.”

Experts worry the show glorifies suicide and other issues shown in the series, including rape, cyber-bullying, and underage drinking. They say parents should watch with their kids, not alone.

The National Association of School Psychologists published a four-page document regarding the show.

“Producers for the show say they hope the series can help those who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide,” the document reads. “However, this series, which many teenagers are binge watching without adult guidance and support, is raising concerns from suicide prevention experts about the potential risks posed by the sensationalized treatment of youth suicide.”

Herda says he and his wife are watching the show before they allow their children to.
