Rain expected in mountain passes this weekend

A strong chance of rain could dampen skiers’ plans this weekend.

The National Weather Service is predicting a high of 44 degrees and a low of 36 on Friday at Snoqualmie Pass. The high for Saturday is expected to be 42, with a low of 35.

There is a 100 percent chance of rain between Thursday and Friday at Snoqualmie Pass, according to the weather service. The weather service expects new precipitation to be between half and three-quarters of an inch Thursday night and half and three-quarters of an inch on Friday.

“Even though moisture has returned and will remain with us into next week, the warm weather pattern is expected to continue with snow levels generally above those passes,” said Ted Buehner, meteorologist for the National Weather Service. “I know, there are some unhappy skiers out there and people are starting to become concerned with our limited mountain snowpack.”

The Summit at Snoqualmie is reporting a base of 67 inches, with a bottom depth of 23 inches and top depth of 58 inches.

Stevens Pass is expected to receive snow until 10 p.m. on Wednesday. Higher temperatures will turn snow to rain on Thursday, which will continue through the weekend. Precipitation is expected to be between half and three-quarters of an inch on Thursday and Friday.

The Stevens Pass ski resort is reporting a base snow depth of 42 inches and a top snow depth of 41 inches, according to the Stevens Pass website. There is a season snowfall total of 144 inches.
