With the decade coming to an end Tuesday, Seattle revelers may have to pack their umbrellas and raincoats for any outdoor plans on New Year’s Eve.

Heavy rain marks return to normal to close out weird year of Seattle weather

“Things could get very wet tomorrow,” warned KIRO 7 meteorologist Nick Allard.

The National Weather Service expects rain Tuesday beginning around 7 a.m., and persisting through the afternoon and evening. Right around the time we’ll all be celebrating the start of 2020, a “slight chance of thunderstorms” will enter into the equation.

Wind and scattered showers are the more likely scenario between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

This will continue as the calendar turns to the new year, with the possibility of over an inch rain in Seattle between Wednesday and Thursday, as well as heavy mountain snow.

“Pardon the pun, but it sure looks like the 20s are going to come in roaring,” said Seattle Weather Blog’s Justin Shaw.

KIRO Radio personalities sound off on their New Year’s resolutions

If you’re looking to stay dry and avoid driving on New Year’s Eve, King County Metro will be offering free bus rides from 7 p.m. Tuesday through 4 a.m. Wednesday. Extra buses will also be on duty around Seattle Center for crowds at the Space Needle’s traditional midnight fireworks show.
